                      On Community Building

A few years ago, I got a call from Washington DC. It was a senator. He read John Kasich’s book “Courage is Contagious” and found an interview with me on page 92. He said, “Tell me about these courageous people you’ve worked with….” We had a lengthy, meaningful conversation. Everywhere I’ve ever worked I’ve met people of courage. I’ve met courageous people right here. To be honest, I've needed to tap into
my own courage, too. Here, I have recently been moved again by the courage of people with a sudden diagnosis or a long-term illness who continue to Keep Walking! When pain and loss happen there is a human tendency to turn inward. I'm in awe of the people who can turn outward - continue to love and continue to exemplify care for their
community.

We really can't do this outward turning alone. Or at least we can't do these painful or vulnerable times very well for
very long - alone. The Sunshine Connection at the
Friendly Senior Center is a blossoming initiative rooted in the legacy of Pat Mitchell, whose spirit of compassion continues to inspire our community. As we look to the future, we are excited to share more about the incredible volunteers who make this program thrive. If you need support, please reach out to me via my contact information, below.
